Cardinals officially release Kyler Murray; Vikings considered favorite to land QB

Cardinals announce QB Kyler Murray they will release him at the start of the new league year

“With the start of a new league year today and the trade now public, we want to thank Kyler for everything he has done for this organization over the past seven years,” Cardinals general manager Monti Ossenfort said in a statement released Wednesday. “We are extremely grateful for his contribution both on and off the field and wish him nothing but the best in the future.”

In seven tumultuous seasons, Murray, 28, completed 67.1 percent of his passes for 20,460 yards, a 121-60 TD-INT ratio and a 92.2 passer rating while racking up 3,193 rushing yards and 32 rushing scores in 87 regular-season games. Murray helped the Cardinals reach the postseason once in 2021, completing 19 of 34 passes for 137 yards and two interceptions in a 34-11 loss to the eventual Super Bowl LVI champion Los Angeles Rams.

His departure became likely in the 2025 season, a campaign in which it appeared the Cardinals needed Murray to prove he was still worth the long-term investment. Instead, Murray struggled early in the season before retiring with a foot injury that cost him all but five games and ended his Cardinals tenure on injured reserve.

With a new coaching staff at the helm, Arizona opted to move on without Murray, who will no doubt draw the interest of a number of QB-needy teams.

Murray’s release Wednesday also extended a streak of seven No. 1 overall QBs who did not remain with the team that drafted him beyond their age-30 season.
