Aaron Rodgers didn't expect to return to the Steelers after Mike Tomlin left

That’s how fast the NFL can change, even by established numbers. In seven days, the Steelers are now searching for their fourth head coach since 1969, and Rodgers is expected to be one and done in Pittsburgh after throwing for 3,322 yards, 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions in a 10-7 campaign.

Having never posted a sub-.500 season during Tomlin’s tenure, with a streak of such campaigns dating back to 2004 in Bill Cowher’s final three years with the club, the Steelers will look to continue their success under a new head coach and lean on another starter.

While breaking in a new head coach will certainly take some getting used to, the Steelers are on familiar ground that could potentially be looking for a new signal-caller. They’ve used a revolving door of QBs, from Rodgers to Russell Wilson to Kenny Pickett and more following Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement.

As for Rodgers, the question is what opportunities he would take moving forward.

Rapoport added that Rodgers may have already thrown his last pass — an unfortunate pick six in Pittsburgh’s 30-6 loss — and Rodgers suggested before this season that the 2025 campaign would be his last. However, he softened his stance towards the end of the year. He is a mercurial figure and he proved that he still has plenty to offer under centre.

With Pittsburgh no longer appearing to be an option, it will either be Rodgers’ fourth NFL home or retirement this coming season.
