Zion Suzuki stunned fans on Sunday with his impressive four saves in Japan’s 2-2 draw with the Netherlands.
Born to a Ghanaian father and a Japanese mother in Newark, NJ, Suzuki is eligible to play for the US Men’s National Team, Ghanaian National Team, but chose Japan.
Suzuki began his football career in Urawa, Japan, joining Urawa Red Diamonds’ youth academy at a young age. He became the club’s youngest professional player at 16 and later played for Parma FC in Italy.
Suzuki made his senior debut for Japan in 2022 and has 25 caps, but this World Cup marks his tournament debut. He’s expected to start over veteran goalkeepers Keisuke Osako and Tomoki Hayakawa.
There’s no report of Suzuki participating in American football.
Suzuki is set to be Japan’s starter until the summer. His impressive form has caught attention, and he’s expected to lead the team to success.
Suzuki played for Japan’s youth teams from U-15 level to U-23, never competing for the US national youth teams. He made his senior debut with Japan, becoming ineligible to play for the USMNT and Ghana.
Suzuki’s recent performances have been impressive, picking up clean sheets against England and Scotland in the international window. He made three saves and nine rebounds in the upset win against England.
Japan now focuses on their next Group F opponent, Tunisia, who face them in Monterrey on Sunday. Tunisia have struggled in the World Cup, and Japan aims to capitalize on their lack of confidence.
