Vikings QB JJ McCarthy clears concussion protocol ahead of start Sunday against Chiefs

The Minnesota Vikings’ starting lineup of musical chairs will land again with JJ McCarthy in Week 14.

McCarthy has cleared concussion protocol and will return to the starting lineup Sunday against the visiting Washington Chiefs. The second-year QB has no position designation.

“Let it go, pull the trigger. You’re ready,” coach Kevin O’Connell said Friday of his message for McCarthy. “He understands that game plan, he’s had a really good week of practice, throws the ball really well. I think it’s now a matter of a lot of the principles that we’ve talked about coming into the game, and most importantly, his decision-making and giving these guys a chance to play football.”

McCarthy practiced all week after missing the Week 13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Prior to that, McCarthy missed five games this season due to a severely sprained ankle.

“He’s had a great week,” O’Connell said, “and I’m excited to watch him play on Sunday.”
