Shoough’s first big rush came early in the third quarter, when he scampered down the left sideline for a 34-yard run to give the Saints a 14-10 lead. With the game tied 17-17 in the fourth quarter, the rookie eluded multiple Bucs rushers who seemed to have him dead in the right direction and found his way to the field goal.
“That was a big game for Tyler,” coach Kellen Moore said. “Scheme on first down, tried to get a chance, they did a good job of stuffing the receivers so we got caught, and it got a little messy on the back end. So, for him to reach and make a play like that — it seemed like there was a lot of confusion in the touchdowns against those guys on film, and lo and behold.”
Shoough joined Archie Manning as the only Saints rookie QB to win multiple starts.
“Every single practice, every single week, I feel my confidence growing more and more,” said Shough, who has gone 2-3 in five starts this season.
The performance pushed the Saints to 3-10 and fifth overall in the draft. The rest of the season is pivotal for Shoough’s future, with hopes that he can be the herald that New Orleans has lacked since Drew Brees retired.
