Schick and Maza again key in Leverkusen’s Matchday 6 win over Freiburg.
Schick and Maza delivered the decisive blow in Leverkusen’s 2‑1 victory over Freiburg, extending their early‑season surge. Can the duo keep this momentum alive?

Having initially gone behind at home to the Breisgau club through Derry Scherhant’s opener, the duo then switched into gear, with Schick’s intelligent backheel from Moussa Diaby’s pass allowing Maza to stroke the ball home with ease and level the scores just five minutes after falling behind.
Schick’s quick-thinking assist means that he’s now registered a goal involvement in every single Bundesliga matchday thus far, and he would soon add another.

Leverkusen’s second goal arrived later than the first, but it proved well worth the wait.
Cornered near the flag, Maza slipped past Engelhardt and Beste, sliced the ball between Engelhardt’s legs and fed Schick, who tapped home to reach six goals and two assists in six league matches.
That feat makes him the first Leverkusen player to score on each of the opening six matchdays. In my view, such consistency is a rarity.
Across Europe’s top five leagues, only Raphinha (14, Barcelona), Erling Haaland (12, Manchester City) and Kylian Mbappé (11, Real Madrid) have eclipsed Schick’s nine competitive goals this season; Mainz’s Phillip Tietz also sits on nine.
Watch:Maza the next big name in the making?

The winner showcased Leverkusen’s many assets: Maza’s grit and skill forged a chance from nothing, while Schick’s intelligent movement and clinical finish sealed the triumph over a direct top‑four rival.
Maza discusses comparisons to Wirtz and carving his own identity.
Together they have powered the Werkself’s joint‑second‑best attack, netting 16 goals to sit fourth, just a point shy of leaders Bayern Munich.
This season Maza has stepped up, already contributing two goals and two assists after only three strikes in all of 2025/26.
The Algerian playmaker also ranks in the Bundesliga’s top‑10 for duels won (75) and open‑play crosses (14), highlighting his rise as a versatile midfield talent.
If Schick and Maza maintain their form, Leverkusen could mount a serious title challenge. Will they keep the pressure on Bayern as the campaign progresses? – IMAGO/UWE KRAFT
