The Steelers release TE Jonna Smith in a move that will save $7 million in salary cap space

One-time Pro Bowl tight end Jonna Smith is on the road again.

Smith has been announced as being released by the Pittsburgh Steelers after one season with the team, NFL Networks insider Tom Pelissero reported. This is a move that will save the club $7 million on the salary cap.

The 30-year-old was traded from the Miami Dolphins to the Steelers last offseason with one year remaining on his contract. He has played for four teams in the last four seasons (New England Patriots, Atlanta Falcons, Dolphins and Steelers).

Smith began his NFL career with four years with the Tennessee Titans. He made his only Pro Bowl in 2024 for Miami, posting a career-best 88 receptions, 884 receiving yards and eight touchdown catches.

The Steelers struggled last year with Smith, Pat Freiermuthand Darnell Washington. Smith had just 38 catches for 222 yards and two TDs. Freiermuth and Washington are both under contract for next season.

Smith will now join a free agent group highlighted by Cade Otton and Isaiah Likely.
