Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers (left wrist) will not play against Bears; Mason Rudolph starting

Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers (left wrist) questionable to play against Bears on Sunday

Aaron Rodgers won’t be able to renew an old rivalry after all.

Rodgers’ left wrist injury will keep him out of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ game Sunday against the Chicago Bears, NFL Network Insiders’ Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Sunday.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin confirmed the news to CBS Sports’ Evan Washburn.

“I’ll give you absolute clarity: He’s not going to play today,” Tomlin said. “He battled his tail off all week, but it’s a smart play to make for us as a group. So he won’t play this week.”

Veteran backup Mason Rudolph will start in place of Rodgers, while rookie Will Howard will serve as his backup.

Rodgers, who suffered a broken wrist in the Steelers’ Week 11 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, missed practice Wednesday and was limited the next two sessions.

Now he will miss the opportunity to play against the Bears for the first time in his career without being a member of the Green Bay Packers.
