San Jose Earthquakes return against LAFC: 'Derby games are always different'

Within 48 hours of kickoff, San Jose was still waiting for their latest designated player to be available for the game, and head coach Luchi Gonzalez had his team ready for any eventuality.

“The team with or without him was going to be ready to compete,” Gonzalez said. “I thought they showed that first half but luckily he was cleared and luckily he got to come into the game, get a lead and help this team compete.”

Of course, Gonzalez was always hopeful about the entry of his new DP.

“There was always the idea that Hernán could have a role in this game, especially since he felt ready and he got a cleanup,” Gonzalez explained of the halftime substitution. “We thought it was a good time to get Hernán [López] in the game.”
