Saints benched QB Spencer Rattler for second-round draft pick Tyler Shough in loss to Buccaneers.

Saints benched QB Spencer Rattler for second-round draft pick Tyler Shough in loss to Buccaneers.

Rattler was a fifth-round pick in 2024. Rattler struggled to start the season after earning the Saints’ starting job out of training camp. He entered Week 8 with 1,450 yards passing, eight touchdowns and four interceptions with an 88.4 passer rating. However, the Rattler hit a wall recently, with three of those picks lost to the Bears last week and his fifth of the season turned into a defensive touchdown for the Bucs.

Shoough entered the game 17-3, having attempted two passes so far this season. He finished with 128 yards and an interception on 17-of-30 passing.

While Shoough certainly moved the ball better, with New Orleans amassing 139 yards on its four carries compared to 121 on the Rattler’s seven, he was unable to lead any drives and was playing against a Buccaneers defense that will be a pretty safe lead.

He showed some promise to adjust to a game that broke down, but he turned the ball over twice on downs, missed Rashid Shaheed’s wide throw on a deep ball that could have come close to making it a game, and threw the aforementioned pick — though it was to WR Chris Olave that allowed safety Antoine Winfield Jr. to tear him away.

Without many positives from either QB, the Saints fell to 1-7 with plenty of questions to answer under center and outside.
