Miami Heat guard Norman Powell spent the last few seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers before being traded before the season in a three-team deal that landed him in South Florida.
In a recent interview, Powell said the Clippers are talking about signing him to an extension until he gets a contract. He explained that he now felt like a lot of what they said was “blown smoke.”
“From my exit meeting last season until I got traded, they were talking about an extension,” Powell told EssentiallySports. “They were saying how much they wanted me there. They were saying how much they valued me and loved me as a Clipper. Now I feel like there was a lot of smoke. They were talking about doing an extension. I was going on vacation. They were talking about how they were going to figure it out when we got back to summer league, when the stuff opened up. I was talking to my agent. a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff that was found doesn’t make sense to me but they were talking about an extension right up until I got traded.”
Powell was with the Clippers from part of the 2021-22 season through the 2024-25 season, and he had some of the best seasons of his career with the club. The veteran guard averaged 21.8 points per game last season and finished fourth in voting for the Sixth Man of the Year award twice in a Clippers uniform.
As such, it’s understandable if he was hurt by the team’s decision to move on from him during the offseason.
Now, Powell has a chance to show the Clippers what they’re missing, as he’s off to a strong start to his Heat tenure. The California native has appeared in three games, averaging 24.0 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 47.7% from the field and 50.0% from 3-point range.
Unfortunately, injuries have knocked Powell out of Miami’s last three games, including Sunday night’s loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Powell is officially listed as questionable for Monday night against his former team.

The Heat (3-3) are looking to get back over .500 this season with a win over the Clippers, and there’s no question Powell would bolster the team’s offense if he were to play. Miami has been without All-Star guard Tyler Herro to start this season, leaving a pretty big void on the team’s offense.
While Powell never received the extension he hoped for from the Clippers last season, he has a chance to earn one in Miami and become a fixture on head coach Erik Spoelstra’s roster through the 2025-26 season.
