Niners’ Kyle Juszczyk doesn’t know what Brock Purdy has to do to get ‘respect that I think he really deserves’

Brock Purdy hits two INTs, leads GW drive 49ers in postseason return to Philadelphia

The stats back up the quarterback’s words as they relate to Purdy.

In parts of four NFL seasons since being selected with the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Purdy has gone 30-15 as a starter, completing 67.9% of his passes for 84 touchdowns in 45 starts for 238.5 yards per game. Stepped into the starting role as a late-season rookie after injuries to Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance, Purdy was the quarterback in the NFC Championship Game before suffering an elbow injury.

The 2023 Pro Bowler has five postseason wins. That’s more than Jared Goff (four), Justin Herbert (none), Lamar Jackson (three), Daniel Jones (one), Trevor Lawrence (one), Jordan Love (one), Baker Mayfield (two) and Kyler Murray (none) – all first-round picks with more time in the league than Purdy.

Still, many will point to Purdy’s success as a result of Kyle Shanahan’s offense and having outstanding players around him. He’s also had his share of dangerous outings where he piles up the interceptions.

Nevertheless, at his best, Purdy has played MVP-caliber ball. So it was in 2025 when he weathered the injury storm and threw for 11 touchdowns from Weeks 15-17, posting 295-plus yards per game. However, he struggled with winner-take-no-win. 1-seed playoff game when the 49ers lost to the Seattle Seahawks, 13-3. He did it again in the NFC Championship game against Seattle.

No matter what they say, Purdy is capable of locking in, according to his career teammates.

“I’m sure, just like a man, there’s that tiny, tiny chip,” Juszczyk said of whether the criticism rubs off on the QB. “But Brock does such an amazing job of blocking out the noise.

With a good feeling Purdy story of having become the most successful Mr. Irrelevant in NFL history, Juszczyk believes his QB could also be subject to a negative narrative based on his draft status, regardless of the team’s stats and performance.

“I don’t know what it is,” Juszczyk said. “I don’t know if it’s just the fact that he’s not a first-round pick. Like if it’s just going to be the story for his entire career and it’s going to be held against him a little bit? Maybe. But I love the guy, as a person, as my quarterback, as a football player. He’s the guy.”

Perhaps most importantly, Purdy is a fellow Juszczyk and their teammates want to lead them on Sundays.

“I want a world-class person as my quarterback,” he said, “and I think that’s exactly what we got in Brock.”
