NFL Network: Chargers agree to terms with TE David Njoku

TE David Njoku announces he's not re-signing with Browns after nine seasons: Time 'to find a new home'

In an effort to make Justin Herbert’s life easier, the Los Angeles Chargers added another weapon on offense.

The Chargers agreed to terms with former Browns tight end David Njoku on a one-year deal worth up to $8 million, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported, according to sources briefed on the deal.

Njoku met with the club earlier this month after the 2026 NFL Draft.

Njoku was a first-round pick in 2017. Njoku spent nine seasons with the Cleveland Browns, passing for 4,062 yards with 34 touchdowns, and earned a Pro Bowl in 2023. Njoku dealt with injuries and inconsistent passers during his time in Cleveland and never reached the heights he indicated in the first round. Career highs were 882 yards and six scores in 2023. In 2025, Njoku had 293 yards and four scores in 12 games, and rookie Harold Fannin Jr.

Still, Njoku has enough athleticism to get open, old skills and enough blocking to play multiple positions at the position.

In LA, Njoku joins Oronde Gadsden II, who showed tremendous potential in his rookie campaign blocking for TE Charlie Kolar. Njoku fills out the room with the ability to get involved anywhere on the field to offer flexibility and give Herbert another passing weapon in Mike McDaniel’s offense. Njoku’s ability as a pass catcher was needed in the offense behind Gadsden, after LA tried to use a blocking TE in that receiving role in recent seasons, to no avail. The TE’s ability to work in space, especially in the red zone, should be a boon for Herbert and the rest of the offense.

Diversity has been the name of the game this year with their additions in LA. Njoku provides more of that, bolstering the depth of a roster trying to finally get over the postseason.
