Nets to Host ‘Swamp Dragons’ Night

The Nets almost became the Swamp Dragons in the 1990s; now they’re honoring that idea with a special game.Brooklyn revisits a near‑miss rebrand with a Swarm Dragons themed night.

Ever wonder what might have been? A quirky slice of Nets history is getting a makeover. The franchise is dusting off a forgotten branding idea, giving fans a nostalgic peek.

Wednesday’s announcement revealed a ‘Swamp Dragons’ night slated for this season. It marks the anniversary of a 1995 rebrand plan that fell short of approval.

The Jan. 29 showdown with the LA Clippers will feature a bobblehead giveaway and join five other ‘Eras Nights’ planned for the campaign. Past celebrations include an ABA tribute on Nov. 18, a 1980s showcase on Dec. 18, a 1990s salute on Jan. 9, a 2000s showcase on March 15, and a ‘Hello Brooklyn’ party on March 31 honoring the 2012 move.

Alongside the event, the Nets will roll out a 60th‑anniversary logo that stitches together visual cues from each chapter of their past.

In 1995 the club almost became the New Jersey Swamp Dragons after president Jon Spoelstra pitched the idea to NBA creative chief Tom O’Grady. Attendance was lagging, and Spoelstra felt the team was stuck in the Knicks’ shadow after the 1977 relocation. For my money, that bold identity could have turned the tide.

Owners voted 26‑1 to adopt the new name, logo and colors. The lone dissenting vote came from co‑owner David Gerstein, who reversed his stance despite unanimous support from the other seven New Jersey owners.

Now, more than three decades later, supporters will finally glimpse the alternate universe the Nets once imagined. Could this nostalgic stunt spark a fresh surge of interest for the franchise?
