“They fell into the same mindset as the Packers,” said Garrett, who sits with 22 sacks. “We just throw everything at him… That’s their MO But of course they start throwing even faster when I’m in line. On that side they had a tile machine there, sometimes two tiles.
“Getting it out quickly, sometimes they were rolling away. They were doing a little bit of everything. I’ve come to expect that. I know they didn’t want me to be the one to break it against them.”
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin insisted the game plan had nothing to do with Garrett securing the sack record, which TJ Watt and Michael Strahan shared at 22.5.
“We didn’t do anything against Myles that we don’t normally do against Myles. The run doesn’t matter,” Tomlin said. “We’ve got to play him down if we want to hurt their win. We did the same last time we played them. Don’t think he had any sacks in that game either. So we didn’t take a different approach because of the seriousness of the record; it’s just business as usual when you’re playing these guys and him.”
The Steelers’ loss sets up the winner of the AFC North battle with the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday night football in Week 18. Meanwhile, Garrett now heads into the season finale against the Cincinnati Bengals with a chance to make history.
