The Yankees have decided not to renew the deals of Omar Minaya and Brian Sabean, Jon Heyman reports. Both served as advisors to GM Brian Cashman and are now free to chase other front‑office jobs.
Both men joined the Bronx club in January 2023. Minaya was titled senior advisor to baseball operations, while Sabean acted as a general advisor to Cashman. The soon‑to‑be 68‑year‑old has spent more than four decades in front offices, notably running the Expos (2002‑04) and the Mets (2005‑10). Highlights include signing Pedro Martinez and Carlos Beltrán, trading for Johan Santana, and drafting Matt Harvey in 2010.
Minaya’s career spans over forty years in baseball management. He was dismissed as Mets GM in October 2010, then worked for the Padres, the Players Association, and later returned to the Mets in special‑assistant roles before a brief MLB consultancy and his Yankees stint. For my money, his extensive résumé still makes him a hot commodity despite an eight‑year gap since his last GM role.
Sabean cut his teeth in the Yankees’ front office during the mid‑80s, helping assemble key pieces for the late‑90s dynasty before heading to San Francisco in 1993. He spent three decades with the Giants, serving as GM from 1997‑2014 and steering the club to the 2002 World Series and three titles in the 2010s.
After decades with San Francisco, Sabean returned to New York in a non‑GM capacity. Like Minaya, he’ll likely attract advisory interest but not a top‑decision role. With the Astros hiring Randy Flores, the Angels remain the only club still searching for a baseball‑ops chief. If your team needs seasoned counsel, his name should be on the list. Will any club finally hand him a full‑time executive slot?
