Kansas City possessed assets that would draw interest—right‑handers Seth Lugo and Michael Wacha, plus left‑hander Daniel Lynch IV. Lugo and Wacha are locked in through 2027; Lynch remains under control until 8 2028. The club refrained from trading these near‑term pieces, reportedly demanding steep prices for Lugo or Wacha given their roles in the 2027 rotation.

Moving either pitcher wasn’t straightforward; Lugo, turning 37 in November, carries a full no‑trade clause, while Wacha, 36 next summer, holds a limited one. Their sizable contracts and mid‑30s status made them natural trade bait. Even if Kansas City feared a 2027 innings shortage, swapping them for prospects and signing different free agents could have reshaped next year’s staff.
