Who will fill the void left by Jeff Albert and Danny Barnes? The Mets said the hitting director and quality‑control coach won’t be on the 2027 roster. MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo reported they may stay within the organization in new capacities, but they’re also free to explore other jobs. Aside from batting‑practice pitcher Kevin Mahoney, the rest of Andy Green’s staff is set to return for his first full season behind the bench.
Albert joined the club in 2022 and spent four seasons steering its offensive strategy. He moved onto the on‑field staff last offseason, keeping the same title. Troy Snitker was added as hitting coach a year earlier, while veteran assistant Rafael Fernandez has been around for decades.
The 2026 campaign fell short, especially at the plate. The lineup ranked tied for 20th in runs and lingered in the bottom third for every slash‑stat. A late‑season surge offered a glimpse of potential, but overall the output disappointed given the talent on paper. In my view, the Mets’ offensive blueprint needs a fresh perspective to unlock that upside.
DiComo notes the club hasn’t decided if it will name a direct successor to Albert’s former duties. They might instead add another assistant to support Snitker as the primary hitting voice. Either way, continuity seems the priority despite the managerial shift. Green inherited the role after Carlos Mendoza’s dismissal in June and, after initially planning to return to the front office, signed a three‑year extension in September. Will the next season reveal a revamped hitting approach under Green’s reign?
