Can a veteran outfielder find a fresh start abroad? The Astros have let Nelson Velazquez go, according to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. He’ll chase opportunities in Asia.
The 27‑year‑old began 2026 in the Cardinals’ system, earning a contract call‑up in late May. Across 34 games in St. Louis he posted a .722 OPS, flashing power while striking out over 30% of the time.
St. Louis designated him for assignment in early August, and Houston claimed him off waivers. In Houston he went 3‑for‑27 with 13 strikeouts, two of those hits being homers. After a week and a half on the roster the Astros DFAed him, he cleared waivers, elected free agency and then re‑signed on a minor‑league deal.
For my money, Velazquez’s slugging talent outweighs his contact woes. He’s logged 37 home runs and a .221 ISO in 728 MLB plate appearances, but a 29.5% strikeout rate and a lofty 16.1% swinging‑strike rate highlight his inconsistency.
The Cubs initially tried him in center field, but he faltered and settled into corner outfield roles. Defensively he’s been below average, posting a –4 Defensive Runs Saved rating over 151 1/3 innings in the outfield last season.
Heading overseas could finally give him regular at‑bats. While reports didn’t spell out his next move, it’s likely he already has a destination in mind. Will his Asian stint revive his career?
