Mike McCarthy: 'It would be a great story' to reunite with Aaron Rodgers

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to await Aaron Rodgers’ decision on whether he will play a 22nd season. That hasn’t stopped new coach Mike McCarthy from being asked about the possibility of reuniting with the Hall of Fame quarterback.

Speaking to former Packers president Bob Harlan at Lambeau Field on Monday, his son, Kevin, asked McCarthy about a possible reunion.

“Yeah, that would be a great story,” McCarthy said, via ESPN’s Rob Demovsky. “I don’t know — and I’d love to break the news to everybody. But, you know, it’s really cool to see Aaron at 42. To see a young man at 22 and all the things he’s been able to accomplish and where he’s at in his personal life and trying to make that decision. He’s in a really good place.”

McCarthy coached Rodgers in Green Bay for 13 seasons, including the transition years from Brett Favre. Seven of Rodgers’ 10 Pro Bowl nods and two of his four MVPs came under McCarthy’s leadership. The only Super Bowl QB also brought the old coach at the helm in 2010.

Rodgers remains a free agent, with Pittsburgh the only obvious landing spot left. In his first season with the Steelers, Rodgers completed 65.7% of 498 pass attempts for 3,322 yards with 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions under Mike Tomlin.

Most indications since McCarthy’s hiring point to the Steelers believing Rodgers will return for another campaign. Like last season, Pittsburgh seems comfortable taking Rodgers’ timeline. And so, we wait.
