Why Coventry, Tottenham and Aston Villa should not panic about their slow startsThat optimism we feel at the start of a new season can be intoxicating. Whatever happened last season, there has been a whole summer to correct things.

The thrill of a fresh campaign can feel electric. After a summer of signings and maybe a new boss, expectations soar. Yet by mid‑September that buzz can turn into nerves. Can early optimism survive reality?

Coventry entered the top flight with historic excitement, their first Premier League season since 2001 after clinching the Championship title. But the leap has proved brutal, and they’re now scrambling to stay afloat as the league’s intensity bites.

They sit bottom, zero points from four matches and still searching for a first goal. Granted, two defeats came away at Arsenal and Manchester City, the league’s powerhouses. Still, Coventry held their own against City and arguably earned some credit.

Looking back, the list of teams that lost their opening four games isn’t endless. Eighteen clubs have endured the same fate, and eight survived, the latest being Everton in the 2024‑25 season.

We’re not here to gloat, just to shine a light on hope. Somewhere amid Premier League history lies a story that can lift the spirits of any struggling side.

Take Crystal Palace in 2017‑18 as a case study. Frank de Boer’s side went five games without a point or a goal before he was dismissed and Roy Hodgson took over, yet the drought stretched to seven fixtures. For my money, Coventry could spark a similar revival. Will they turn the tide before the winter break?
