Chelsea’s Midfield Engine: Caicedo Beats Palmer in Value

Midfield duo Moises Caicedo and Cole Palmer as key to Chelsea's successChelsea may cope better without Palmer’s flair than without Caicos’s possession skill.

Can Chelsea really thrive without Moises Caicedo’s ball‑winning flair, even if Cole Palmer’s spark is missed?

Marking his 150th cap, Caicedo was on the pitch for just 72 minutes.

Although his substitution for Romeo Lavia was pre‑planned, the Ecuadorian still left a strong imprint.

Alonso shifted him deep, tucking him into the back three’s midfield while youngster Josh Acheampong surged forward.

He botched only two passes and posted the highest completion rate among Chelsea starters, also leading the team in tackles made and won on Saturday.

Chelsea’s win rate sits at 48.1% with Caicedo, dropping sharply to 25% when he’s absent.

Alonso insisted, “Moises on the field always upgrades our midfield, and a stronger centre makes the whole side more complete.”

He added, “That’s the platform we can build on. Our front men are solid defensively, so I’m pleased Moises is back and ready to be a key figure.”

The squad’s other midfield options range from captain Reece James, who can also slot into defence, to bench players Romeo Lavia and Valentin Barco, who weren’t named for the match. In my view, James offers the most versatile cover.

James is likely to vie for the spot vacated by Henderson, though his knee prognosis remains unclear.

Chelsea are still a work in progress, conceding again after a sloppy set‑piece that led to Evanilson’s strike.

If Henderson and Caicedo can seal those defensive gaps, the Blues could climb the table, especially with Pedro, Rogers and Palmer already powering the league’s top‑scoring line.

Alonso praised, “They complement each other, providing presence and stability.”

He noted, “Their game sense lets them operate in tight areas, while defensively they offer excellent balance.”

He said, “Henderson and Caicos work brilliantly together; the opening goal proved that. Their partnership has solidified the side, and I’m truly impressed.” Looking ahead, can this midfield core propel Chelsea into a top‑four finish?
