Michael Carrick stays on as Manchester United manager for the upcoming Chelsea showdown.

Carrick ran Tuesday’s session, hoping to snap United’s eight‑game winless streak before Saturday’s visit to Stamford Bridge.

A 3‑0 loss to Bournemouth on Sunday deepened doubts, leaving United just one spot above the drop zone.

Club chiefs have reportedly eyed replacements, with former Newcastle boss Eddie Howe and ex‑Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann on their shortlist.

After stepping in as interim in January, Carrick earned the full-time role in May after steering United to a third‑place finish and Champions League qualification.

Yet his side has faltered, securing only a single win from eight league games this campaign.

Defender Lisandro Martínez slammed the board for insufficient spending after United’s 2‑0 Champions League defeat to Atlético Madrid.

Captain Bruno Fernandes then ripped Carrick’s tactics following a humiliating 4‑1 loss to Como in the next Champions League tie.

The Portuguese was benched for Sunday’s Bournemouth defeat and never entered the match.

Fans chanted Carrick’s name as he walked to the tunnel, then turned their boos toward the players once he left the pitch.

Carrick waved toward the Stretford End as supporters continued chanting his name after the game.

“I have mixed emotions, feeling for my players; they’re enduring a tough spell. Some aspects we can influence, others are unraveling and the lads sense it now,” he said.

“The supporters’ reaction is also mixed. That connection means a lot, and while it will take time to process, I truly value their backing,” he added.

“Our situation is exactly where it stands; we haven’t produced results or performances worthy of praise,” Carrick admitted.

Carrick was spotted at United’s training ground on Monday morning, despite the first team enjoying a day off.

Director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada arrived at the facility Monday, while Carrick departed around 17:00 GMT.

Howe, 48, is free after leaving Newcastle last summer, but any club hiring him must meet a multi‑million‑pound compensation claim from the Magpies due to his early contract exit.

Nagelsmann, 39, quit as Germany manager after their 2026 World Cup quarter‑final loss and is aware United have shown interest.

Sources say Aston Villa’s Unai Emery also impresses United, though his existing contract would make a move tricky for the Spaniard. Could he be the spark United need?
