Santa Fe falls to Vasco da Gama, knocked out of Copa Sudamer

The international dream of Independiente Santa Fe ended in Brazil. The cardinal side lost 2‑0 to Vasco da Gama in the second leg of the 2026 Copa Sudamericana quarter‑finals and bowed out of the continental tournament. The Bogotá club failed to answer a rival that capitalised on its chances and secured a semi‑final berth.

Santa Fe entered the tie needing a result to stay alive. In the first leg at Nemesio Camacho El Campín, both teams drew 0‑0. The stalemate left the Colombian side bitter, having come close to winning but unable to turn chances into a lead for the return in Brazil.

The decisive match told a different story. Vasco da Gama dominated at home, leaving the cardinal‑coached side with no room to react, and they paid dearly for their lack of fluidity and precision for much of the game.

Vasco struck in the first half

The game started evenly in Rio de Janeiro. Vasco took the initiative early but struggled to turn possession into clear chances. Santa Fe held its own and even created a notable opportunity.

In the 19th minute, Hugo Rodallega threatened to open the scoring. After a cross and a rebound, the striker shot, but keeper Leo Jardim made a fine save to deny the Colombian side.

Minutes passed as the Brazilian side kept the ball moving while Santa Fe tried to stay organised. Then, at 37 minutes, the first blow landed.

Bruno Duarte gave Vasco da Gama the lead with a mid‑height cross that troubled the cardinal defence. The Brazilian forward beat Daniel Torres and slotted the ball home.

The play also saw Emerson Rivaldo suffer a strain and leave the field. Maximiliano Lovera came on as his replacement.

Vasco headed into the break 1‑0 up, while Santa Fe needed answers in the second half to avoid elimination.

Vasco extended the lead and sealed the tie

The second half began with the Colombian side seeking a response, but the flow again favoured Vasco da Gama. By the 55th minute, Santa Fe had no impact and the visitors controlled the tempo.

At the 65th minute several substitutions were made. Santa Fe introduced Nahuel Bustos and Kilian Toscano, while Vasco brought on Carlos Andrés Gómez and Thiago Mendes to maintain control.

A minute later the Brazilian side found the net again. Vasco attacked down the right, delivered an unmarked cross to David, who headed it in for a 2‑0 lead.

With the gap widened, Santa Fe’s situation grew tougher. The cardinal side held possession late but failed to craft clear chances, resorting to long balls that were cleared by the Brazilian defence.

At 85 minutes the Bogotá team still displayed mis‑takes, poor decisions and little link‑up. Time was running out and a comeback looked increasingly remote.

Santa Fe says goodbye to the Copa Sudamericana

The referee blew the final whistle, confirming Vasco da Gama’s 2‑0 victory, which eliminated Independiente Santa Fe from the 2026 Copa Sudamericana quarter‑finals.

Vasco advanced to the semi‑finals, where they will meet the winner of the São Paulo‑Boca Juniors tie. The Argentine side leads that series 1‑0 and will host the second leg at Morumbi.

For Santa Fe, the exit marks the end of their continental campaign. The cardinal club must now focus on upcoming Colombian league fixtures amid a physically demanding season.

Santa Fe’s upcoming matches

The Bogotá side returns as a visitor in the Liga BetPlay against Alianza on Saturday, 19 September, at 4:05 p.m.

Santa Fe will also play the second leg of the Copa BetPlay against Unión in Santa Marta on Friday, 25 September.
