Austin Smotherman captured his second straight PGA Tour crown, edging Seamus Power in a rain‑soaked Butterfield Bermuda Championship playoff.
Both golfers shared the 54‑hole lead at Port Royal Golf Course after Sunday’s round was halted by fierce winds and the final day was scrapped by worsening weather.
Tied at 16‑under, they returned Monday for a sudden‑death showdown, each posting pars on the breezy par‑three 16th during the first two extra holes.
A changed tee forced Power into a bogey on the third hole, while Smotherman’s two‑putt par secured the win, adding to his Bank of Utah triumph earlier this month.
“We’re out here playing an amazing sport in a stunning setting,” Smotherman said. “Whatever comes our way, Zak [Williamson, caddie] and I will stay on top of our game.
I felt we handled Sunday well and the tour kept us informed about today’s plan. Knowing the situation helped, and finishing first feels like the cherry on top—pretty awesome.
How Smotherman edged Power in Bermuda.
Smotherman opened with a 65, then fired back‑to‑back 66s to co‑lead, while Power carded a four‑under 67 on Saturday, also reaching 16‑under.
The PGA Tour announced Sunday night that, because of an unfavourable forecast and uncertainty about completing the final round, the event would be officially a 54‑hole tournament.
Monday’s playoff looped the 178‑yard 16th, where Smotherman executed a solid up‑and‑down from the right side to match Power’s two‑putt par on the first extra hole.
Power escaped the bunker to within five feet and made par on the second hole; Smotherman then found the green and two‑putted, as the pin was moved and the yardage trimmed to 152 yards for the third attempt.
Momentum shifted when Power’s iron landed in the left rough and barely reached the green, resulting in a bogey, while Smotherman calmly two‑putted from 15 feet for the win.
Smotherman becomes the eighth multiple winner this season and the first to claim back‑to‑back PGA Tour titles since Matt Fitzpatrick; the 54‑hole event marks the tour’s first such tournament since the 2024 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro‑Am. For my money, his streak signals a rising force on tour.
What’s next?
The tour now heads to Mexico for the VidantaWorld Mexico Championship, kicking off Thursday at Vidanta Vallarta, where defending champion Brian Campbell will return.
