Dortmund says a new contract for Niko Kovač is inevitable after his side opened the 2026‑27 campaign unbeaten.
Ahead of Friday’s Matchday 5 clash with Werder Bremen, the Black Yellow team sits two points clear, boasting four wins from four games and the league’s sole perfect record.

The eight‑time German champions also enjoy winning starts in the Champions League and DFB Cup, and although Kovač’s current deal expires this season, the club believes his future lies here.
CEO Carsten Cramer told German media the club holds “incredible esteem” for Kovač. In my view, that confidence is justified. He added that a few talks remain after the international break, so the situation stays open.
The 54‑year‑old, who previously led Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg, was hired in February 2025 to replace Nuri Şahin when Dortmund were languishing near the bottom.
He turned the tide, steering the side into Champions League qualification and finishing second to Bayern last season, and this term he set a record for most points in a coach’s first 50 games.
