Cavan Sullivan Sets USMNT Goal Record in 3-0 Win

Cavan Sullivan becomes USMNT youngest scorer in 3‑0 rout of MexicoCavan Sullivan became the USMNT’s youngest scorer as the U.S. beat Mexico 3‑0.

The U.S. stunned Mexico 3‑0 on Saturday, and 17‑year‑old Cavan Sullivan etched his name in the record books as the national team’s youngest scorer.

Sullivan was 17 years and five days old when he struck in the 63rd minute at State Farm Stadium, capitalising on a slip by Mexico keeper Raúl “Tala” Rangel before launching a daring long‑range finish.

His strike doubled the lead after fellow teen Julian Hall opened the scoring earlier, and Malik Tillman sealed the 3‑0 result, Mauricio Pochettino’s young team recorded an emphatic win over its biggest Concacaf rival.

For Sullivan, the night also delivered a personal milestone in U.S. soccer history.

Who was the USMNT’s previous youngest goalscorer?

Amazingly, the record he shattered had existed for only four days.

Mathis Albert of Borussia Dortmund had set the previous benchmark, scoring at 17 years and 131 days in a 4‑2 triumph over Chile.

Born September 28, 2009, Sullivan trimmed that mark by more than four months with his goal against Mexico.

“This is what you dream of,” Sullivan said. “I’ve visualized this not just these past few days, but my whole life.”

It adds another chapter to a career already littered with age‑defying feats.

Who is Cavan Sullivan and where does he play?

The Philadelphia native honed his craft in the Union academy, joining at age ten.

In May 2024 he inked the then‑largest Homegrown MLS deal, earning a spot on Philadelphia’s senior roster at 14. Two months later, at 14 years and 293 days, he became the youngest ever to appear in a major North American professional sports league.

Now 17, he’s a regular for the Union, tallying seven goals and 12 assists in 24 MLS games this season and snagging September’s Player of the Month honor.

His rise abroad mirrors his club surge. Sullivan debuted for the senior USMNT against Peru last month at 16, then featured versus Chile before netting his first senior goal versus Mexico.

Is Cavan Sullivan joining Manchester City?

All signs point toward a future in Europe.

When he signed his 2024 Philadelphia contract, a clause gave Manchester City the option to sign him at 18, reportedly worth up to $5 million, and Sullivan has already voiced his dream of breaking into City’s first team.

Yet uncertainty clouds what City will look like when he becomes eligible.

A Premier League commission recently ruled City guilty of serious financial breaches, finding it used “sham” commercial deals, falsified accounts and hid its true finances, also breaching Premier League and UEFA spending caps.

City denies the accusations and filed an appeal on Oct 1, claiming “material errors” in the verdict; no sanction has been imposed, with any penalty to be decided separately.

Sullivan won’t be able to join City until he turns 18 in September 2027, leaving ample time for the saga to unfold.

For now his focus stays on Philadelphia and the USMNT. At just 17 years and five days, he already occupies a spot in the national team’s record books.
