Eulalia Marzetti, mother of Argentina’s national team coach Lionel Scaloni, passed away on Tuesday at 74 in Pujato, Santa Fe, after battling a long‑standing health issue.
The Argentine Football Association announced the news on Wednesday via its social channels, extending condolences to the world‑champion coach and his family.
“The AFA, led by President Claudio Tapia, sends its deepest sympathies to our coach Lionel Scaloni and his relatives for the loss of his mother, Eulalia Marzetti,” the body said.
The statement also offered a heartfelt embrace to the man known as “the Gringo,” wishing him strength in this difficult time.

Scaloni previously spoke about his mother’s health. He revealed details during a pre‑match briefing.
Argentine outlets report Marzetti had been fighting an illness for years, which Scaloni revealed in 2021 during a press conference ahead of the South American qualifiers for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
“I can’t focus on the World Cup right now,” he said, admitting family matters occupied his mind.
Later, Scaloni dedicated the 2021 Copa América trophy to his mother, marking his first major silverware as Argentina’s manager.
Argentine football rallies behind the coach. Fans across the country have voiced their support. Will Argentina keep thriving under his guidance?
The Argentine Professional Football League also expressed sorrow, sending a message of condolence to the coach.
“The LPF deeply mourns the loss of Eulalia Marzetti, Lionel Scaloni’s mother. The whole nation stands with you and your family, Lionel!” the organization posted.
Since taking charge, Scaloni led Argentina through a historic era, winning the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima, the 2022 Qatar World Cup, and the 2024 Copa América. For my money, this trophy haul cements Scaloni’s legacy.
