Giants’ Cam Skattebo on jogging pace in ankle rehab: ‘I can get away from like a hippopotamus’

Giants' Cam Skattebo on jogging pace in ankle rehab: 'I can get away from like a hippopotamus'

In a Week 8 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Skattebo was derailed from a promising rookie season and needed surgery to repair his dislocated ankle.

Although he still has a long way to go to get back up to full speed, the Arizona State product is confident he’ll be good to go in the offseason and certainly training camp in July.

“Oh, I’m ready to go to training camp,” he said. “Absolutely. I probably only have a little over a month until I’m fully back to 100%. OTAs are coming up in about a month and I’m excited. I’ll be ready to go.”

Never a die-hard type of baller, Skattebo’s pairing with Jaxson Dart and his tongue-wagging, head-butting, crying nature quickly made him a star attraction in New York and beyond. In his shortened first season, he had 617 scrimmage yards and seven total touchdowns.

When the fellow quarterback returns to action, he will find a very different group.

Most notably, John Harbaugh is at the helm, replacing Brian Daboll as head coach.

“You can tell he loves football,” Skattebo said of Harbaugh. “He called me late one night and talked about some offensive linemen and some defensive backs and how I like them. He doesn’t care what his players think and he’s going to do what’s best for the team to win games.”

The veteran Baltimore Ravens coach has brought some of his previous coaches, staff and players with him. Among the latter is Pro Bowl quarterback Patrick Ricard.

Skattebo-Ricard’s backcourt could prove punishing for opposing defenses. Skattebo certainly thinks so.

“It’s going to be pretty exciting,” he said. “I talked to Pat yesterday right before he signed and I was like, ‘Hey, man. This is going to be a really fun time.’ I got word a few hours later that he was signing. It’s awesome to have him. I know he will be another ball of energy to bring to the team. I’m ready to play with him. I know the other guys are, and when you have a 305-pound linebacker running at you and you still have a 220-pound running back after that, it’s not a fun sight to see. So I’m excited for fourth-and-1 and third-and-1.”

Whether he’s trying to outrun hippos or grinding his way through rehab, Skattebo seems excited and having fun no matter the endeavor. After a season-ending injury and a massive facelift for the Giants pitching staff, Skattebo appears intact and ready to push hard for his 2026 campaign.
