Free-Aga Pass Rusher Za’darius Smith raises hope of returning to Detroit.
The lions cut elder Edge Rusher earlier this season as part of savings collection. Smith has stayed in the free agent market and remains one of the top players who are still available as we tear down the gym.
“We both know where I want to be,” Smith told Tyler Dragon of USA Today Sports. “Hopefully I can get back to Detroit because the coaches and everyone in the office are great. When I am there, I feel like a leader and as I can influence the young boys and do great things. Hopefully I can get back where I want to be in Detroit.”
The Lions acquired Edge Rusher in the middle of last season after injuries were in defense. In eight games in the usual season, Smith made four sacks, 12 tackles and one gap. Even 32 years old, an elder can still push pockets and is trustworthy against the race.
Smith turns as a rotation of an elder who can set the edge and give leadership. Former ravens, Packers, Vikings, Browns and Lions Pass Rusher hopes to get another shot to chase a ring.
“I go for 11 years. As an elder (champion title), the only thing I need is,” Smith said. “I made the bags, all-pro, pro bowl, so it’s really just I’m getting a circle now and winning a championship title.”
The lions continue to need Edge Rusher. Aidan Hutchinson’s recovery is doing well and Detroit brought Marcus Davenport, who tended to injury, but did not compose a bypass until Ahmed Hassanein in the sixth round. Rotating edge like Smith would make sense to add at some point.
With the bulk of the NFL clubs holding minicamps this week, the ceasefire will still be on the market probably waiting until near training camps to find out where they could play in 2025. It is also possible that some might be forced to wait until week 1 when wages are not guaranteed.
