As a rookie in 2022, Smith was called upon to debut at left tackle, where he played 1,022 snaps to just 121 with Tyron Smith sidelined for most of the year with an injury.
Tyler Smith’s sophomore season was his only year playing exclusively left guard.
In each of the last two seasons, he has played at least 100 snaps at left tackle, with 900-plus at left guard.
An injury to left tackle Tyler Guyton in 2025 eventually led to Smith’s return.
Guyton, who dealt with a broken bone and a high ankle sprain that caused him to miss seven games, is expected to be ready by Week 1.
With Guyton at left tackle, Smith likely at left tackle, Cooper Beebe at center, 2025 defensive tackle Tyler Booker at right tackle and Terence Steele at right tackle, the Cowboys offensive line looks to be a formidable unit in front of quarterback Dak Prescott if healthy.
Booker should only get better in Smith’s mind, indicating a great fit.
“He approaches every day the right way, he’s a guy who’s constantly trying to get better, constantly asking questions,” Smith said of Booker. “We’re on the phone all the time… I think the sky’s the limit for his sophomore year, and he’s definitely off to a great start his rookie year.”
Smith’s rookie year was a starting point of a different kind, one that came at left tackle rather than guard. Wherever he ends up in 2026, Smith is sure to be lined up where it’s best for the ‘Boys.
“Eventually, I’ll be in the position I need to be in,” he said. “I’m good with where we are.”
