Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ ultimate goal: ‘Retire as the owner with the most Super Bowls’

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' ultimate goal: 'Retire as the owner with the most Super Bowls'

Jones may have three, but his velocity has declined since the early 1990s. In fact, it’s been 30 seasons since the Cowboys last hauled in the Lombardi Trophy.

Last season, the Cowboys went 7-9-1. They recently waived cornerback Trevon Diggs and fired defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus after the team allowed 511 points, the most — by four touchdowns — in franchise history. The Cowboys’ offense was more effective, ranking seventh in the league in points, but they will have two key players to deal with this off-season: receiver George Pickens and quarterback Javonte Williams.

“Every team has holes,” Jones said. “You have to. It’s just the way it works. But I see six teams that weren’t in the playoffs last year that are in the playoffs this year. I know it can happen. I know how close it is. And I think we can get in here and get the defense in shape faster than it might look.”

Jones knows he has a chance with Dak Prescott still playing at or near his peak, and the owner hinted at an aggressive offseason, even if the Cowboys have been pretty quiet in free agency the past couple of springs.

“The bottom line is this (offseason) is, yes, very important,” Jones said. “They’re right. We want, while Dak is playing the game and getting it down like he has, we want to get here and actually do better than what we did this year.

“So, (the) combination of these things gives us an incentive to, dare I say it, break the budget to try to get something done now. Yes. Yes. We will do great things.”
