On Sunday, Dallas Cowboy’s defense officer, Matt Eberflus, turns to Chicago, the club that ran him for less than 10 months.
Asked to face his former team, Eberflus closed down the reunion with many former players.
“I see it as one opportunity for us to go there and really perform. It’s Game 3,” he said through the Marquee Sports Network.
Eberflus went 14-32 as Bears head coach. He was fired after 13 weeks after alarming clock management in Thanksgiving Day loss Lions.
Asked about the reaction he expects from Bears fans, Eberflus fired back from the question.
“I haven’t thought about it,” he said.
When Dallas DC takes over Caleb Williams, it will only be the third time since 1970 that the second year of QB’s first round will meet the defender who composed him as a head coach: Week 2, 2019: Cleveland’s Baker Mayfield vs. New York Jets DC Gregg Williams (Cle Won 23-3); Week 1, 2004: Rex Grossman from Chicago vs. Detroit Dc Dick Jauron (Det won 20-16).
It is apropos that Bears, who have cycled through team managers and coaches, would make this little list twice.
The knowledge between coaches and players could participate in Sunday’s competition. Eberflus knows the players well. Ben Johnson also went up against Eberflus twice a year in NFC North, so he understands what to expect on Sunday.
“He could throw a lot of curves on us,” said recipient DJ Moore about Eberflus. “Knowing him, he will make the area the terms, so we will see a lot of it, hopefully. Hopefully they will throw some man there so we can follow them.”
Williams stated that he was facing Eberlfus’s defense a lot during exercises.
“I’ve played a lot of balls against that defense and as he runs it, so it’s interesting in a way,” said Williams. “Obviously, my coach Matt was obviously last year. So being able to go past all this and be able to go there and help Chicago Bears to be 1-0 this week.”
At 0-2, Bears sorely need to win his first victory under Johnson. Getting it against Eberflus was a bonus. Of course, Cowboys’ defense, who chokes Williams, would give the former coach some revenge.
