Washington Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu is eligible for Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions after his one-game suspension was reduced to a $100,000 fine on appeal, the NFL announced Tuesday night.
Hearing officer Derrick Brooks oversaw Luva’s appeal.
On Monday, Luvu was handed a one-match ban for repeated violations of the rules of the game designed to protect the health and safety of players. The violations stemmed from Luvu’s use of hip-drop tackles, the most recent of which came Sunday in the Chiefs’ loss to the Seattle Seahawks. The Week 9 game marked the third time this season that Luvu has been seen for a hip fracture. For that, Luvu was fined for Week 4 and Week 8 hip drop tackles.
Luvu, who is 29 years old, will now be fined again, but he will be allowed to go out on the field. Had the suspension been upheld, Luvu would also have received a $508,333 game check.
The linebacker is now in his eighth NFL season and second with Washington. In nine starts so far this season, Luvu has 50 tackles, two sacks and four tackles for loss.
