Now the Cardinals have to resume the deck again. Traditional third -back Emari Demercado is the next man up, with former Jets in the fourth round Michael Carter and Zonovan “Bam” Knight also available. Arizona also added Jermar Jefferson to the training squad on Wednesday.
“It’s never about one guy for me,” Gannon said on Wednesday. “Everyone has to do their job at a high level, get to train and play well. Quite comfortable with the boys who are taking over the role.”
It is understandable that Benson’s loss will encourage new questions about the efficiency of Cardinal violations that have been struggling to find consistency. Demercado’s versatility will be tested and offensive manager Drew Petzing will probably have to lean on every back.
“I don’t know,” Gannon said when asked if DeMercado could do the job on all three floors. “We will see how well the week is going, but we obviously know that we have to play that role. But feel good with Bam and Emari and Mike Carter. I’m sure all three of them will play.”
