Canada’s men’s national team made history with a 6-0 victory over Qatar, but the moment was marred by a devastating injury to star midfielder Ismaël Koné.
The sound of Koné’s bone breaking echoed through BC Place as the 22-year-old’s lower leg dangled in an unnatural position. The injury happened in the 51st minute, with Canada leading 4-0, and about 40 meters away from Qatar’s goal.
Koné’s initial reaction was more shock than pain, and he was stretchered off as he waved to the crowd chanting his name. He knew his tour was over and was rushed to the hospital for surgery, where his colleagues visited him within hours.
Canada’s defender Alistair Johnston recalled the memory of a similar injury two summers ago, when Tajon Buchanan suffered a similar fate. Johnston said, ‘It sounded like a shot… I looked over him and saw our bench go up instantly, and then I realized the angle of his foot, and that’s when it really hits you.’
The injury added emotional weight to the day, but Canada’s players were determined to make the most of the moment. As Johnston said, ‘It’s really hard to see one of your brothers go down, but if we needed any extra motivation for this tournament, we got it now.’

Koné’s injury happened when neither team had an attacking opportunity, and neither was in danger. The match was already 4-0 in Canada’s favor, with Qatar playing with 10 men after an earlier red card.

The Canadians stunned Qatar’s defenders with impressive confidence and swaggering moves, displaying the ultimate ‘slyness’. Now, Canadians will remember that night and ‘that 2026 team,’ as David had hoped, with the sport’s potential only growing in the future.
Canada’s manager Jesse Marsch said, ‘Everyone was a bit shaken by the whole experience, because of the nature of the injury and because Ismaël is such a big part of the heart of our team. It’s going to be a big loss for us… but you also saw him waving to the crowd and almost making everyone else feel at ease with the fact that he’s injured, and that’s an incredible statement about him.’

The Canucks later added two more, with David scoring a hat-trick, becoming the first player from a host nation to do so since 1964. Koné’s replacement – and childhood friend with CF Montréal – Nathan Saliba also got into a tough situation and scored a free kick on his World Cup debut.

Saliba said, ‘I didn’t think I could [manage the emotions] but I just had to do it.’ ‘It’s like throwing someone in the ocean and seeing if they can figure out how to swim. That’s kind of how it was, and it’s never easy to do something like that.’

For David, the historic performance quelled the buzz that had been building around his form after a dismal showing against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Nicknamed ‘Iceman’ for keeping his cool under pressure, he ended the day in a Golden Ice tie with Argentina’s Lionel Messi and walked off the field to Drake’s ‘National Treasure’ – featured on the Canadian rapper’s new album, Iceman.
It was all part of Canada’s ‘swagger,’ a topic that surrounded the team’s preparation for the match. After securing his first points in a men’s World Cup last week, finding the confidence to create moments and memories was a focus.
David said, ‘I want people to say, ‘D—, remember the 2026 Canada team”.
Local Vancouver right back Niko Sigur said, ‘We’re at our best when we play with that poise or some confidence.’

Marsch said, ‘When I came here, the vision was more than this World Cup.’ He committed to Canada’s program in 2024 and recently extended his contract through 2030.

The atmosphere in Vancouver took it to another level. Thousands of people gathered in the pedestrian areas around the stadium, before an impressive and passionate march to the match featured smoke, flares, and trumpets.
Fueled by pre-match confidence, the group of Voyageurs supporters made their way along the banks of Vancouver’s False Creek and past Science World, a domed building that has been dressed as the official match ball of the World Cup.
The scenes set the tone, bringing an impressive energy to the sea of red inside the building.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau became the first leader of the host nation to attend this World Cup, cheering goal after goal, and adding his voice to the roars of the crowd at BC Place.
After the game, he joined the Canadian players in the locker room as well, showing how much the moment meant not just to the 25 players in the gym or Koné in the hospital, but to more than 41 million Canadians.
Trudeau said, ‘You showed a level of character that some people never reach in their lives, and you showed it when the whole country and a good part of the world was watching, and if they didn’t watch it, they’ll be watching it tomorrow.’
With the win, Canada faces its biggest opportunity yet, getting another chance in Vancouver on Wednesday against Switzerland, needing just a draw to secure top spot in Group B.
In the moments after the game, however, even as the fans took to the streets in seemingly endless celebration, all they could think about was Koné. Now, they want to win and stay in Vancouver, for him.
Midfielder Stephen Eustáquio said, ‘We just have to push, we just have to show that together we can make things shine.’
