Bills' James Cook hits Panthers in 216-yard win: 'When you have James Cook, you let him cook'

Offensive coordinator Joe Brady has gotten away from Cook for stretches far too often. It was like it started happening early again on Sunday. Then the Bills fed their chef.

The offensive line worked and opened up big holes. Cook’s 141 rushing yards for a touchdown in Week 8 are the most by any player in a game in 2025, according to Next Generation Stats.

“Joe was just like, ‘Guys, we’re going to go in there and we’re going to do what we do best,'” Bills offensive lineman Dion Dawkins said. “If it was a layup, if it was in-zone, if it was out-of-zone, if it was a layup — whatever it was called — our job was to close and I’m glad we got the right guys to be able to do that.”

“Cook was feeling himself, Josh was in rhythm. We saw that the punter was in rhythm and the offensive line was in rhythm, and when you’re in good rhythm as a unit, good things happen.”

Cook’s 216 rushing yards were the most by a Bills player since Hall of Famer OJ Simpson in Week 12, 1976 (273). His 11.4 yards per carry were the most by a RB in a game since Derrick Henry in Week 14, 2018 (min. 15 carries).

Cook became just the fourth player in NFL history with 215-plus rushing yards and 2-plus rushing TDs in fewer than 20 carries in a game, joining Henry, Bobby Mitchell and Bo Jackson.

“I feel like I could go back, so I don’t feel like I got hit,” Cook said after the win.
