NFL Network: QB Brendan Sorsby to sit out 2026, be eligible for 2027 NFL Draft

NFL Network: QB Brendan Sorsby to sit out 2026, be eligible for 2027 NFL Draft

Sorsby, who played four college seasons split between Indiana and Cincinnati before transferring to Texas Tech in January, appeared in 35 games with 7,208 passing yards, 60 touchdowns and 18 interceptions, along with 22 scores and 1,295 yards.

After his gambling came to light following his move to play for the Red Raiders, Sorsby admitted himself into a gambling addiction treatment program in April. The NCAA initially ruled him ineligible to play college football in 2026. A temporary injunction on June 8 then allowed him to serve a two-game suspension, but Sorsby soon became eligible again by dropping his lawsuit against the NCAA with the intent of entering the supplemental draft.

However, the NFL informed teams on June 23 that they would not have a supplemental draft, a right granted to them under the current collective bargaining agreement. The Canadian Football League also announced on June 26 that it would not allow Sorsby to sign with any teams or be placed on their contract list.

As part of Tuesday’s decision to avoid further litigation, Sorsby also released a statement.

“There has been a lot of news about me out there and I want to share this statement to make sure things are clear,” his statement read. “I take 100% responsibility for my actions. I was out of control of my gambling problem and it took me a lot to realize that, but this was truly the best thing that could have happened to me. Because of this, I have been able to get the help I need and focus on my recovery.

“The news of the supplemental draft doesn’t change anything about my recovery — I will continue to take it one day at a time. Focus on making myself better through this process and make sure to share what I have learned and will continue to learn with others in the future. I am fully committed to being the best version of myself that I can be as I prepare for the 2027 draft. God makes no mistake about this good.”

The agreement by all parties to allow Sorsby to maintain his ’27 draft eligibility as he sits out the upcoming season effectively puts a hold on all levels of the game – college, NFL and CFL.

He had no further avenues to play football traditionally in 2026. His path to finding his place in the NFL next season now begins in earnest.
