Aidan Hutchinson: Lions remain 'in window' to win Super Bowl despite disappointment in 2025

The Lions advanced to the NFC Championship Game in the 2023 campaign, Hutchinson’s second season. Despite Hutchinson’s injury, the Lions clinched the NFC’s top seed in 2024, but disappointment came quickly in the playoffs when Detroit was upset by Washington in the Division One.

For the Lions to get back to where they want to be, Hutchinson’s stellar play and improving the pass rush alongside him is key.

Hutchinson has traditionally been a one-man engine in the pass rush department, having led his team in sacks in each of his four years, including the injury-shortened 2024. Some help was found last season when Al-Quadin Muhammad recorded 11 sacks, becoming the first Lions player to tally double-digit sacks alongside Hutchinson.

After emerging as one of the league’s leading goalscorers, Hutchinson is brimming with confidence following his healthy and impressive return.

“I feel like I’m going into Year 5, I feel like I’m complete, in the sense of running,” he said. “Your passing game evolves to some extent and it grows over the years. There are wrinkles that you put in, but I feel like I have an answer for everything now.

“I feel like the knowledge of the game, the knowledge of the serve speed, my own development, I’m at a point where I’m very confident.”

One change to Hutchinson’s game is likely how often he is on the court.

His career-high 14.5 sacks came with 1,005 career defensive snaps.

He is aware that the team is looking to monitor his usage, but it all depends on the situation in the game. If it’s a big area, Hutchinson isn’t going to go off the field.

“Yeah, it’s a fine line,” he said, via the Detroit Football Network. “Sometimes it’s like overtime, I’m not coming out. If it’s the fourth inning, I’m not really coming out. I think towards the end of the season last year we started to be a little more aware of, hey, I’m going to take these first two games off this drive. Just (doing) it, I found it in the fourth quarter, and it just helped in the fourth quarter, and it helped here. Definitely.”

As with every season, there will be changes from the previous campaign, but the window has not closed on the Lions’ Super Bowl aspirations. Not as long as Hutchinson has anything to say about it, anyway.
