After losing a training camp battle to Daniel Jones for the starting job, Richardson broke his collarbone in pregame warmups in Week 6. Richardson remained on IR all season with a nagging injury, which was made all the more unfortunate considering the chance to play came when Jones went down with a torn Achilles in Week 14.
Jones’ first season in Indianapolis was very successful before it came to a screeching halt. In the offseason, the Colts finally committed to Jones in the form of a two-year, $88 million contract, but Richardson had clearly seen the writing on the wall before, asking for a trade that the club agreed was the best way forward.
Although there were thought to be some suitors for the 2023 no. In a time when nothing seems to be going his way, Richardson turns his attention to the only thing he can control.
“If I don’t put in the work to become a better player, I won’t be in the NFL,” Richardson said. “I just want to work hard and constantly think about my opportunity that I have now and try to take advantage of it.”
The Colts, meanwhile, have been nothing but supportive of Richardson throughout the process. If no trade materializes before training camp, Richardson is expected to be in a backup QB battle with Riley Leonard, who could also get plenty of reps as Jones is still recovering from injury and a potential chance to start the season.
Maybe a better showing this summer will get him back as QB2 in Indy or get another team interested. Richardson is preparing for anything at this point.
