Charles Omenihu: Defenses have figured out Lamar Jackson; Josh Allen would win the title with the Ravens

The Lamar Jackson vs. Josh Allen feud continues.

Even in April, after a year in which neither quarterback made the AFC Championship Game nor won the MVP, the debate over which player is better continues to be conjured up by flamboyant podcasters and manufactured debaters to fill the void when a meaningful pigskin game is months in the making. With nothing better to talk about, here we are.

Charles Omenihu, who played the past three seasons for the Kansas City Chiefs and signed with the Washington Commanders this season, has played both backs. On the “Speakeasy” podcast, the pass rusher said he thinks NFL defenses have figured out how to cover Jackson but are still struggling against Allen.

“That’s the thing about Josh Allen. I don’t think the league really got him,” Omenihu said. “With Lamar, honestly, you bring a five-man rush on him and drop the pocket, he drifts back and, unfortunately, he might make a play that’s not going to be the best play for the Ravens. With Josh, he’ll drift back, run around, and he’s so hard to deal with every person he can throw down. He’s unbelievable in the arm.

“Like I said, I guess [people] have figured out Lamar. You come after him, block all lanes, you five rush him and cover his men, and I think you can do it. It has been shown.”

Given the debate surrounding the topic, at least Omenihu brought an interesting view to the table. The passer was asked if there is one quality that Jackson boasts over his counterpart.

“The speed. If you let him out, he’s gone,” he said. “And he’s not going to fumble the ball. Josh is going to fumble the ball. That’s the thing about it. If Josh could just relax off the turnovers — don’t try to be Superman all the time — the Bills, I think, beat the Broncos. Before it was my boy, (Brandin) Cooks, who didn’t make the catch, they never would have made the catch, they never would have won.
