Former NFL CB Marcus Peters succeeds father as football coach at McClymonds High School

Marcus Peters has come full circle.

A former NFL cornerback was announced Thursday as the new football coach at McClymonds High School in Oakland, according to the school’s website. He succeeds his father, Michael Peters, who retired after more than three decades on the job and 13 years as head coach.

Peters served as a volunteer assistant coach there the past two seasons, and he also played for McClymonds under his father.

He went on to play college at Washington before entering the NFL as the 18th overall pick of the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2015 draft. Peters won Defensive Rookie of the Year with Kansas City, the first of two consecutive Pro Bowl seasons to start his career and three overall. He played in 116 games (115 starts) split between the Chiefs, Los Angeles Rams, Baltimore Ravens and Las Vegas Raiders during his career, accumulating 33 interceptions, seven pick sixes, 97 passes defensed, 12 forced fumbles, 10 fumble recoveries and 389 tackles.

He last played for the Raiders in 2023, but was cut in November of that season after making 12 starts for the club.

Now the 33-year-old sits at the helm of a program he knows well, with plenty of success to back it up.

McClymonds High School, which boasts a 135-23 record over the past 14 seasons, has four state championships in its history and has advanced to nine consecutive Northern California title games.
