Webb was previously the Broncos’ coordinator/quarterback since joining Payton in 2023. He has helped oversee Nix’s steady rise as the Broncos’ starting quarterback over the past two seasons, culminating in Denver’s appearance in the 2025 AFC Championship Game – losing where Nix lost in the contest. The Broncos defeated Buffalo.
Several teams recognized Webb’s handiwork in the 2026 recruiting cycle when the Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills and Las Vegas Raiders interviewed him for head coaching openings. After the Broncos fired Joe Lombardi, installed Payton Webb at OC and seemed to stave off an exit elsewhere.
Payton added that Nix was not involved in his decision to pass the torch to Webb, who he had been mulling over for the 2025 season.
It marks a big change for Payton, who has been called upon to play from the sidelines for the majority of his 18-season head coaching career.
Entering his first season as an NFL OC, Webb is poised to make a big impact for the Broncos in 2026.
