Special teams coordinator Michael Clay is returning to the Eagles on a new contract

Clay sticking with the Eagles wasn’t a foregone conclusion after Philadelphia’s disappointing playoff exit, though aside from Jake Elliott’s individual struggles, the special teams certainly didn’t cause the Eagles problems.

Along with the defense, the unit often helped keep the Eagles in position to win, with the most obvious example being a narrow win over the Rams in Week 3 where Clay’s squad blocked a field goal on each of Los Angeles’ final two possessions. After another such block, Jordan Davis took his own ball all the way back for a 61-yard touchdown as time expired.

Such success was part of the reason Clay attracted interest from other organizations.

The Buccaneers specifically interviewed Clay for their vacant special teams position after being cleared by the Eagles, but Tampa Bay will now have to look elsewhere.

Clay remains an Eagle, meaning Philly only has to work on filling one coordinator position for now after telling Kevin Patullo it was moving at OC.
