Valencia striker Rafa Mir arrested after sexual assault accusation

Valencia striker Rafa Mir has been arrested by Spanish police on suspicion of sexual assault.

The 27-year-old, a former Wolverhampton Wanderers player, was taken into custody on Monday evening after charges were laid against him and another unidentified person.

The Guardia Civil confirmed on Tuesday that “two people have been arrested for an alleged crime of sexual assault, one of them is Valencia player Rafael Mir.”

Valencia said in a statement: “In relation to the press reports that have appeared regarding the arrest of Valencia CF player Rafa Mir, the club is aware of this arrest and, in the absence of details on this subject, for the moment, it can only affirm that it will cooperate with everything that justice may require.”

The Spanish youth international began his career with Valencia before signing for Wolves in 2018.

He made just four appearances for the Premier League side during a three-year spell in England which included three separate loan spells at Las Palmas, Nottingham Forest and SD Huesca.

Mir joined his boyhood club earlier this summer on a season-long loan from La Liga rivals Sevilla, where he has scored 24 goals in 105 appearances in all competitions.

He represented his country at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, scoring three times in six games as Spain lost the gold medal match to Brazil.
