In communities full of obstacles, Birnbaum knows how important sports can be in guiding young people on the right path.
“Teamwork is one of the greatest aspects of life. Whether you’re a family, a soccer team, anything you do, you need people around you to support,” said the second overall pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. “You’re not going to win the game by yourself, but you’re not going to lose the game by yourself either.”
Birnbaum’s personal involvement in the cause has inspired Audi to donate $20,000 to DC Scores through the Audi Goals Drive Progress fund – helping to ensure the organization continues to positively impact the local community as it approaches its 30th anniversary.
Birnbaum added, “I think that’s the biggest thing: Give underprivileged kids an outlet.” Whether it’s football or poetry, something to look forward to, something to have fun with friends, just smile and be happy. And to have some purpose outside of school. So this camaraderie with your friends is something that shaped me and hopefully it sticks with some of the kids.”
The Audi Goals Drive Progress initiative supports MLS athletes who make an impact off the field by donating to nonprofit organizations that create sustainable communities, foster equity and inclusion, and enrich the lives of those in need.
