MLS Matchday 17 betting preview: Look for Cincinnati to pick up 3 points at home

It was an eventful midweek lineup on Matchday 16, with Cincinnati breaking a modern MLS record with just one loss in its first 15 games and Vancouver scoring within 15 seconds of each period against Houston – one of the best defensive performances. team in the league at that time.

Matchday 17 promises more excitement with interesting matches ahead.

Neil FitzGerald here from The Game Day to preview the upcoming fixtures for Matchday 17 in Major League Soccer.

The MLS odds I use for my betting picks are current as of noon ET on June 1st at the specified sportsbook.

New York FC vs. New England preview

NYCFC lost their second home game in a row last week against a strong Cincinnati team, and they face another formidable opponent this week in New England. With New York on a six-game winless streak now, including five losses, it will be challenging to see them get results against New England.

Bruce Arena’s Revolution have now failed to win a league game in their last four after going unbeaten in their previous eight. They needed a brace from Carlos Gil to salvage another tie on the road against Atlanta in a game where they were outscored 20-5 and held just 28% of the ball. The Revs have a great chance to straighten things out this week against a struggling New York team, but it’s a risky game given their recent performance.

Seattle vs Portland preview

The Sounders have won just three of their last nine league games and only continue to hold the top spot in the West in terms of extra games played. [over St Louis and LAFC]. Seattle suffered a 1-0 loss against San Jose on Wednesday despite dominating much of the game. They will be looking to get their results back on track against a Portland side that has won just once on the road this season.

Portland has lost two in a row and won just once in its last five league games. A short trip to Seattle, along with their relatively fresh legs [having not played midweek], will give them a renewed spark. The Timbers are just outside the playoffs in the West, but it’s too speculative to bet on a turnaround this week.

Cincinnati vs. Chicago preview

Cincinnati is coming off a break in the Supporter’s Shield competition and has had the best start in MLS history recently, with just one loss in 15 games. They won on the road against Colorado and New York FC in their last two games, and are a perfect 8-0 at home, so expect the momentum to continue.

Chicago is coming off a 0-0 draw on the road against Toronto after two straight 3-3 ties at New England and host Atlanta. They were clearly outplayed in Toronto, having been outshot 19-4, and were lucky to come away with the point. Don’t expect Cincinnati to miss the opportunity to get three points here.

CINCINNATI vs. CHICAGO: Cincinnati to win (-145) • PointsBet Sportsbook: Cincy’s home record and Chicago’s road record make this an easy pick

Columbus vs. Charlotte preview

Columbus returned home against the Rapids on Wednesday and came away with a 3-2 win. Argentina midfielder Lucas Zelarayan scored again and added two assists as the offense continued to fire. Look for the momentum to continue against Charlotte in another home game this week.

Charlotte is coming off an unfortunate 1-0 loss to Philadelphia, where the only goal scored was denied by Charlotte goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina. Before that game, they had won four of their last five league games, so they will want to continue their strong run when they take on a Columbus side looking to maintain some form of build-up.

Miami vs DC preview

Miami has now followed its three-game winning streak with a four-game losing streak. Last week they lost 1-0 at home to the new New York Red Bulls and will now try to change their luck against a DC United team that hasn’t won on the road since week 9. So betting on Miami now is too risky a play .

DC United have lost two league games in their last nine games. They have won one of their previous six and took a 2-0 lead at home to Montreal in midweek. Look for Rooney’s team to redeem themselves this weekend against last place Miami.

New York Red Bulls vs. Orlando preview

The Red Bulls continued their strong performance in Miami and came away with a strong 1-0 win on the road, beating Miami 18-6. New York has played great

well on the back end and sits third best in the league in goals allowed (13). If they can find a way to score one against Orlando this week, look for them to come up with another result.

Orlando has lost just once in its last six league games and has an impressive 3-1-2 record on the road this season. The team sits mid-table just outside the playoffs, so look for them to play tight and try to come away with points.

● NEW YORK RED BULLS vs. ORLANDO PICK: Total Goals Under 1.5 (+230) • FanDuel Sportsbook: With each team’s defensive strength, look for a 1-0 result here.

Philadelphia vs Montreal preview

The Union have lost just once in their last ten league games but came away with a lucky 1-0 win over Charlotte last week based on an own goal. Look for the Union to take control of this game at home as they confirm their strong presence.

This Montreal side gave up a two-goal lead to DC United in midweek but fought back heroically to tie the game and come away with a goal. Unfortunately for Montréal, they’re on the road again this week, where despite this week’s heroics, they have a dismal 1-7-1 record, including six without a goal.

Austin vs Salt Lake preview

Austin survived a 22-shot attack by Minnesota in midweek to earn a 2-1 win at home. They have now won three out of four league games and are in the playoffs. Look for their home court to inspire Austin once again but be careful about getting too invested right now.

After an unfortunate 3-2 loss against the resurgent LA Galaxy on Wednesday, in which they put 20 shots on net, Salt Lake has lost two of its previous eight league games. However, on the other side of the equation, they have only won twice in those same eight league games, so they are a tough team to invest in.

Dallas vs Nashville preview

Dallas have lost just twice in their last eleven league games and were unbeaten in six before losing 2-1 at Sporting KC in midweek. Their defense continues to be smart but will match up against a strong Nashville team. Look for FC Dallas to give Nashville a hard time, but results are hard to come by.

Nashville leads MLS, having conceded just 10 goals all season, and they will look to that strength on the road against a struggling Dallas team. This group hasn’t lost a league game in their last seven, so it should be an exciting battle to watch, with safer bets on low scores and higher odds of a win or draw.

Minnesota vs Toronto preview

Minnesota’s three-game unbeaten streak ended with a 2-1 loss at Austin last week, but it wasn’t for lack of effort as they put 22 shots on net. So look for Minnesota to regain some momentum and start winning at home.

With Federico Bernardeschi back in the lineup, Toronto FC dominated their last game against Chicago but once again couldn’t find the back of the net. [despite 19 shots] in a 0-0 draw. This is the fifth game in their last six that Toronto FC has failed to find the scoreboard. Look for Toronto to continue to push but be wary of betting on them right away.

St Louis vs Houston preview

St. Louis currently sits one point behind conference-leading Seattle with many games to play. Unbeaten in their last three, this impressive group will look to push the visitors in Houston after their disastrous trip to Vancouver in midweek, where they conceded six goals.

Before their Wednesday game in Vancouver, Houston had conceded 12 goals all season. In that one game they had six more, including one goal in the first 15 seconds of each half! This group remains winless on the road and will need to deal with their shock defeat quickly if they want to challenge St Louis.

ST LOUIS vs HOUSTON: St Louis to Win (-120) • PointsBet Sportsbook: Bet on St Louis’ continued momentum and Houston to be eliminated after their 6-2 loss.

Colorado vs. San Jose preview

Colorado has lost five games in a row and is struggling to find the net, scoring just 14 goals so far. Coming off a last-gasp loss against Columbus (3-2) should help, but this Rapids team is still looking for its first home win of the campaign.

The Earthquakes won their first road game of the season in midweek in a fortunate 1-0 victory in Seattle. They find themselves on the road again this week but should have a slightly easier game against a fighting Colorado squad. If the odds are high, they could provide an interesting bet for a road win.

Vancouver vs Kansas City preview

The Whitecaps followed up an unfortunate 3-1 loss against St Louis with a truly impressive six-goal haul against one of the league’s toughest backlines in Houston on Wednesday.

As this team finds consistency, they can be dangerous for opponents and exciting to watch for supporters. Look for Vancouver to keep their strong home game going against a KC team that has only won once on the road.

After an emphatic 2-1 win over Dallas in midweek, Kansas City has lost just once in its last six league games. They will look to continue their strong play against a surging Vancouver team.

Looking for an exciting game and lots of action around the nets.

VANCOUVER vs. KANSAS CITY: Total Goals Over 3.5 (+186) • FanDuel Sportsbook: Bet on two rising and exciting teams throwing haymakers at each other for 90 minutes.
