Browns’ Kevin Stefanski calls Jedrick Wills’ ‘trade decision’ comments ‘poor choice of words’

Browns' Kevin Stefanski calls Jedrick Wills' 'trade decision' comments 'poor choice of words'

In ordinary parlance, a “business decision” usually suggests that a person is avoiding the risk of injury in order to preserve their earning power. Since Wills is in a contract year, it made sense to interpret his comments accordingly and also to assume that his selection led to him being benched.

Stefanski said Will’s sentence was not related to his decision or his comments. But Jones will continue to man the starting left side, leaving Wills in an odd spot at a financially critical moment in his career.

The average fan might look at Will’s pedigree — a former first-round pick out of Alabama who has started at least half a season or more for two NFL playoff teams — and expect him to command significant cash in the offseason. But Will’s performance has largely fallen short of expectations during his NFL career. Pro Football Focus’ grades back that sentiment, giving him an average grade or worse in each of his five NFL seasons.

He’s on a fast track to becoming a swing tackle mercenary at the next stop. And since Cleveland has another long-term option in Jones, there probably won’t be any pressure to throw money at Wills to keep him around — especially not after he’s handled his current situation so haphazardly.

Because injuries always happen in the NFL, it’s safe to expect to see Wills back on the field at some point this season. But where he might play in 2025 remains to be seen — and might not bring the compensation most would expect for a former first-round pick.
