Bronny James, 18, announced in May that he would play college basketball at Southern California.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Bronny James, the son of NBA superstar LeBron James, was hospitalized after going into cardiac arrest while participating in a workout in Southern California on Monday, a family spokesman said Tuesday.

The spokesman said medics treated 18-year-old James at the scene and he was taken to hospital in a stable condition after leaving intensive care.

“We ask for respect and privacy for the James family and we will update the media as more information becomes available,” the spokesperson said. “LeBron and Savannah would like to officially send our deepest thanks and appreciation to USC’s medical and athletic staff for their incredible work and dedication to the safety of their athletes.”

Bronny James announced in May that he would play college basketball for the Trojans. He is an incoming freshman and was one of the best high schools in the country.

The Associated Press left a message seeking comment with a spokesman for the USC athletic department and the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, who went into cardiac arrest in an NFL game last season, tweeted his support: “Prayers to Bronny and the James family too (prayer emoji) here for you as you have been for me my entire career.”

Bronny James was hit just over a year after 7-foot USC freshman Vince Iwuchukwu collapsed during practice. Iwuchukwu went into cardiac arrest on July 1, 2022, as athletic trainers rushed to use an automated external defibrillator to revive him.

Iwuchukwu had a battery-powered pulse generator called an implantable defibrillator implanted in his chest, the Los Angeles Times reported. Iwuchukwu was able to play with the Trojans in the second half of last season.
